Reformation Knox

EXCERPT AND INTRODUCTION

Now I have related my rather disappointing experience in finding Knox’s grave as it is as somewhat dispassionately. Of course, I arranged the material in such a way that I hoped it might irritate you somewhat. And unless I miss my guess, you are already a bit more than simply annoyed. I think you should be. After all, John Knox is the Father of English Presbyterianism.

There is a sense in which God providentially used John Knox to influence the Westminster Confession of Faith to which you subscribe. There is a sense in which God providentially used John Knox to influence the Book of Church Order and the kind of church discipline you support go back to Knox. There is a sense in which God providentially used John Knox to influence the liturgy we use here in this place. There is a sense in which God providentially used John Knox to influence our understanding and administration of the sacraments. Certainly there is a sense in which our penchant for biblical truth and our absolute refusal to submit to nothing other than the authority of God’s Holy, Inerrant, and Infallible Word go back to Knox.
